How it Works

At OUT ON THE DOWNS, we make it easy for individuals and charities to take part in inspiring outdoor challenges while raising funds for causes they care about.

Whether you’re joining an existing event or working with us to create something bespoke, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

🧭 Choose Your Challenge

Browse our Adventure Challenges to find a walk or cycle that excites you — from the Yorkshire 3 Peaks to the London to Paris Cycle. If your chosen charity or event isn’t listed, don’t worry — we can still make it happen. Just get in touch.

Many of our events are exclusive to a charity on a set date, but if that date doesn’t work for you, you can join one of our open challenges and still raise funds for your chosen cause.

💳 Booking & Fundraising Options

Once you’ve selected your challenge, you’ll pay a non-refundable registration fee to secure your place. Then choose one of two fundraising models:

1. Self-Funding

  • Pay the full cost of the challenge yourself
  • No minimum fundraising target
  • Raise as much as you like for your charity

2. Minimum Sponsorship Pledge

  • Pay a registration fee
  • Commit to raising a minimum amount (usually double the remaining cost)
  • Submit 50–80% of your target 10 weeks before the event

We’ll notify your charity once you’ve booked so they can support your fundraising journey.

📦 What You’ll Receive

After booking, you’ll get:

  • confirmation email
  • fitness plan tailored to your challenge
  • kit list to help you prepare

We’ll also keep your charity informed and provide guidance on setting up your fundraising page through platforms like JustGiving or Enthuse.

📝 Worked Example: National 3 Peaks Challenge for Demelza

Let’s say you’re taking on the National 3 Peaks Challenge to support Demelza:

  • Registration Fee: Paid at booking
  • Option 1 – Self-Funding: You pay the full cost and raise what you can
  • Option 2 – Minimum Sponsorship: You raise a set amount (e.g. £800), with 80% due 10 weeks before the event

If you don’t meet the fundraising target, you can switch to self-funding and still take part.

🧾 Important Notes

  • Exclusive Events: Everyone on the challenge is supporting the same charity — great for team spirit and shared purpose.
  • Open Events: Participants may support different charities or join for personal goals.
  • Reference Section: If joining an open event, be sure to enter your charity’s name during booking so we can notify them.
